Today, Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, TD, joined a webinar hosted by the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA), alongside Michael O’Flaherty, Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights.
The Minister spoke on Ireland’s position on the European Commission’s new LGBTIQ Equality Strategy and Ireland’s work to protect and promote LGBTI+ rights internationally.
During the webinar, the Minister said:
‘Ireland welcomes the launch by the European Commission of the EU’s LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025. This is particularly important in the face of increasing discrimination, both worldwide and within the EU, on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Ireland will continue to raise its voice in support of LGBTI+ rights internationally.’
The webinar, hosted by the IIEA, forms part of the Global Europe series, supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs. This was the first event hosted by the IIEA on LGBTI+ rights.
