Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne TD has welcomed the announcement by Samskip of a new weekly direct shipping route between Dublin and Amsterdam starting from Monday 25th January.
“This new service is very welcome and will add to the other direct services to EU ports that have come on stream in recent months. It allows our exporters and importers to bypass customs and other checks which were brought about by Brexit and provides greater reach into EU markets in northern Netherlands, Germany and beyond” Minister Byrne said.
Launching on Monday, the fixed day service departs from the TMA Terminal Amsterdam on Monday evenings for arrival in Dublin on Wednesday and a weekend return to Amsterdam. This complements the existing Rotterdam-Ireland shortsea services by offering rail, barge and road customers in the Netherlands a new Monday night departure to Ireland. Fixed day container services to/from Amsterdam provide the certainty on which supply chain managers serving the Dutch and German markets can base business growth. Subject to initial moves, Samskip would consider calls to connect other ports in Ireland to Amsterdam direct.
“New services like this are of great benefit to businesses and consumers and allow for our full participation in the EU single market” the Minister concluded.
